After the war in 1949, the "Folk Arts Troupe," was composed of railway and postal workers. They adapted "The Legend of the White Snake" into a work imbued with leftist spirit and sentiment. This show, incorporating Chinese and Western elements that dispel superstition, was presented as "improved Taiwanese opera," in the form of Western opera at the Taipei Zhongshan Hall.
The story is set in the post-martial law era of the 1990s. A avant-garde small theater troupe working hard on their new production. However, due to their poor performing skills, creative fatigue, and the inability to sustain their livelihoods, the theatrical production remained stagnant. One day, they find out an old magazine from 1950s, and get inspired by the "The Legend of the White Snake" that they performed in 1950s. The troupe decide to change their play as a salute to the working class’s spirit.
"Go Go Wild Grass"uses "meta-comedy" to explore how the ideas of an “improved Taiwanese opera”in different eras reflects the sensibilities of these different periods. The show demonstrates the ways of those pioneers in the 1950s and the 1990s, how they react to the present through their art works and pursue a future undergoing dramatic change.
